Obituary Betty Maple

Mrs Betty Maple 12 August 1925 – 17 October 2018

We regret to announce the death of Mrs Betty Maple, who died peacefully at home aged 93 years. She was the wife of WSM, Assistant Bursar to the school from1948 – 1984. She will be remembered by those who knew her, for her sense of fun, boundless energy and enthusiasm.

Betty’s was a life well led. She was a keen member of Tiverton Operatic and in the 50’s and 60’s, swelled the ranks of the Blundell’s School Chorus for special occasions, under the auspices of Sam ‘Jazz’ Hall. She was involved in a number of charities, notably the Cancer and Leukaemia in Childhood Trust (CLIC) and latterly for Marie Curie and Cancer Research.

For a number of Old Blundellians, she may be best known/remembered as Headmistress firstly of Redvers School and then of The Wooden House School at Chevithorne Barton. Both parents and past-pupils of those schools will feel that they owe a huge debt of gratitude for the way in which that sense of fun, happiness and fulfilment, radiated into their lives, and for the excellent start those schools provided for achievement in later life.

Betty is survived by her five children. The funeral will take place on Saturday 10th November at 12.30 pm at the Exeter Crematorium.

A Memorial Service to celebrate Betty’s life will take place in the Blundell’s School Chapel in the spring of 2019.
