Obituary Peter Thurley

The following words were written by Peter's wife, Lesley.

It was a lovely idea to arrange for current pupils to send a birthday greeting to Old Blundellians. Peter would have been delighted to receive it (as I was) sadly he died in December ’22 and I have omitted to inform you.

He was proud of being an old Blundellian, and the school gave him such a tremendous start in life, skills and interests which served him very well. Not a sportsman but a good swimmer, he dreaded The Russell, but his love of music was fostered by Eric Sedrick and stayed with him for life. He learned the organ and joined the choir, skills which served him well. From 1981 to 2021 he was a church organist and choir director, locally in South Devon. Developing music skills in others and staging concerts and oratorios.

He was in Francis House and credited his housemaster for shaping his character. He attended some Old Boys Days and was pleased by the standard of music in the service, and the developments to the school. I accompanied him on a few occasions and was very impressed with the facilities and opportunities available. I had the privilege of attending ladies day in 2021 and enjoyed the lunch and hearing the speaker Ruth Binney.

He took Sciences at A level and this set him up for a career in the Water Industry as a Treatment scientist. The breadth of his education enabled him to have lifelong interests in many things and encouraged him to try new ventures.

I am sure the current generation of pupils are being similarly inspired.
