Girls' Hockey

The girls’ OB hockey match was just as exciting as the boys’ match, only the current girls 1st team won 3-2. The game was exciting and had end to end action. The current girls took the lead and managed to keep it until the final whistle however the OB's made a valiant effort to come back and looked threatening. This year we were fortunate enough to have four Blackmore's on the pitch at once which has never been done before. Edwina Blackmore played extremely well in goal and kept the score down when it could have been much more.

On the whole the game was played in great spirit and was extremely competitive and that is just what I could have asked for.

Boys' Hockey

A large squad of OB’s arrived on Friday evening to take on the School 1st XI. Led by Sam Smith, the OB’s constantly rotated players on and off and this enabled the game to be played at a fast pace throughout.

Sam Smith brought himself on after about ten minutes and hit two ferocious strikes to give the OB’s a 2-0 led. The school hit back with Paul Riegel scoring a superb drag flick from a short corner and at half time the scores were level 2-2.

Both sides created numerous chances after the break and there were some fantastic saves in goal from both Jack Grandfield (OB) and Hugh Hamilton-Green. The OB’s went ahead once again only for Adam Soul to bring the boys back on level terms. Fittingly perhaps, the game finished in a 3-3 draw.

It was wonderful to see so many OB’s return and the game was played in a competitive but friendly manner. There was a particularly keenly fought battle in the midfield between the Clarke brothers, Ollie (OB) and Ben. This rivalry could be repeated in 2017.

Blundell's v OBs Friday 15th March 2013

OB Hockey 2013It was somewhat inevitable that the match would be played in very wet conditions and that the OB’s would struggle to have a full complement of players at the designated start time of 6.30pm. By the time Ben Wonnacott emerged from his car and joined the fray, regularly demonstrating that he has lost none of his skill or natural balance, the school had already established a comfortable lead. Despite having a full set of players for most of the match, the OB’s were in danger of being humiliated as the School 1st XI established a 5-0 lead. At the time, a composed finish from Matt Stones looked little more than a consolation as the OB’s eventually got on the scoreboard just before half-time from the penalty spot.

During this break, Simon Higgins made an abrupt exit and this signalled a change in fortunes for the OB’s. James Mayes put his whistle away and started sliding the ball all over the park. The midfield of Bess Menheneott, Ben Shelbourne and Harrison Briggs dominated, and James Waddington struck a great reverse-stick goal as the OB’s threatened a remarkable comeback. Unfortunately, time ran out as a much more competitive second half almost enabled the OB’s to end on level terms with the School.
